the nra to the table in a very sort of high pressure timetable right now? >> reporter: this struck me because when the president was asked about this during questioning, he said that he has faith basically in members of the nra. so making it clear that he's going to be trying to appeal to actual members as mothers and fathers, that he said when you look at the nra, there are a lot of people there who want to be sure that people go through background checks, they want to make sure that kids are safe. he thinks that there is sort of a place where nra members don't want to see military style weapons in the hands of people, a period or might do harm. that was sort of where he was looking and using the bully pulpit. friday, we'll be hearing from the nra for first time. they have been saying no comment. they have remained mum following the shooting in connecticut on friday. but this is just a really a sign now that things are very much heating up here, that we will be hearing from them on friday and that we heard from the president getting specific today, brooke. >> nra releasing a statemen

about the nra? >> well, the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers. i would expect that they've been impacted by this as well, and hopefully they'll do some self-reflection. here's what we know. that any single gun law can't solve all these problems. we're going to have to look at mental health issues and look at schools. there's a whole range of things that joe's group looks at. we know that issues of gun safety will be an element of it. you know, what we've seen over the last 20 years, 15 years is this sense that anything related to guns is somehow an encroachment on the second amendment. what we're looking for is here a thoughtful approach that says, we can preserve our second amendment. we can make sure that responsible gun owners are able to carry out their activities, but that we're going to actually be serious about the safety side of this. that we're going to be serious about making sure that something like newtown or aurora doesn't happen again. there is a big chunk of space between what, you know, the second amendment means and having no rules at al
restrictions yet. the nra, which traditionally has the power to hurt democrats in red straigates who support gun control, has been notably silent. after shooting spree in the movie theater in colorado, several lawmakers from red states told me they definitely feel the nra's clout still here on capitol hill, and just being, wolf, in senator feinstein's front office for five minutes, i could see the phones ringing off the hook about her call to revive or reinstate the assault weapons ban. at least make that the first piece of legislation in the new congress but it is very interesting it's not just the nra keeping mum right now, republican senators, most of them who we've talked to, are declining interview requests. they just don't want to talk about it quite yet. >> we'll see what happens down the road. dana, thank you. >>> this unimaginable tragedy. adults are desperately struggling to comprehend, so how do you possibly begin to talk about this with your children? our own dr. sanjay gupta, he's getting some new information for us. he'll be joining us shortly. fr. ♪ ...could end with adding
it done? >> well, they probably don't have the votes today. it will be interesting to see what the nra who is going to be making press announcements tomorrow start to say and whether they start letting some members off the hook on assault weapons bans. i don't know if they will, but i can tell you this. the nra has four million members. you know, the campaigns like mayors against illegal guns and others, within a few weeks they are going to have four million members. this is just not going to be tolerated in the same way anymore. and senators like scott brown may end up being kind of the first test on this. he made that crafty statement because he opposed a federal bill in the past. >> you mean the state should have the responsibility. >> right. but he knew as a senator that it was never going to pass. he was the number one recipient of nra money in his campaign over this last year. a lot of senators are going to find themselves in the cross hairs because of taking all of that money and when he comes back to -- tries to come back to the senate, that may very well be a big issue. >> like jo
